Lub Oil Equivalent

(http://www.augustenergy.biz/, August 31, Monday) ---

Question from Leow Soo Khoy

We have equipment from suppliers from all over the world.

They require lub oil.

Some have specified the lub oil brand and type, others just the ISOxxxx.

My question: Is there a method to read the code/ISO and determine the equivalent?

This will solve logistic and stock problem.

ITIC warns shipmanagers on lay-up liability

(http://www.augustenergy.biz/, August 27, Thursday --- ITIC press release ...

The International Transport Intermediaries Club (ITIC) has urged its shipmanager members to seek legal advice before entering into any contracts with owners relating to the laying-up of vessels.

ITIC says there has been a recent sharp increase in the number of lay-up contracts which it has been asked to review. Some of these agreements are based on amended shipmanagement contracts, where the manager acts as agent for and on behalf of the owner. Other agreements involve the manager offering lay-up services to the owner as a principal rather than as agent.

ITIC points out, “Where the manager offers these services as an agent of the owner, it will arrange for the appropriate anchorage to be sourced and also arrange for the maintenance and repair of the vessel. If the manager contracts to actually undertake the maintenance and repair of the vessel itself, the contractual relationship between the owner and the manager changes completely. In those circumstances, the manager is taking on the role of a contractor and therefore may require ship repairers’ liability insurance in the event of damage being caused to the ship by anybody who is actively engaged in its maintenance and repair on behalf of the shipmanager.

“Such maintenance and repair insurance is available, but it may be substantially more expensive than existing professional indemnity insurance. As such, shipmanagers should have any lay-up contracts reviewed by their legal advisers prior to making any decisions about the insurance cover they are likely to need.”

SINGAPORE: Jurong Shipyard secures US$160million FPSO conversion contract from Modec

(http://www.augustenergy.biz/, August 24, Tuesday --- Article from EnergyAsia ...

(http://www.energyasia.com/) --- Jurong shipyard Pte Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Singapore's Sembcorp Marine, said it has been awarded a US$160million contract by Modec Offshore Production Systems (Singapore) Pte Ltd to convert a Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) tanker, the Ohdoh, to a floating production storage and offloading(FPSO) vessel, which will be renamed FPSO Kwame Nkrumah MV21.

Jurong Shipyard said the contract work includes detailed engineering, installation and integration of 18 topside modules, installation of external turret and power generation, accommodation upgrading as well as extensive piping and electrical cabling works.

The vessel, which is part of the Tullow Ghana Ltd Phase 1 development plan, is due for delivery in the first quarter of next year. Jurong Shipyard added that the FPSO will be deployed to the Jubilee field off the coast of Ghana in approximately 1,100-metre water depth. This is one of the largest oil fields discovered offshore West Africa in the past 10 years.

Jurong Shipyard said the FPSO Kwame Nkrumah MV21 is able to process 120,000 barrels of oil per day, inject more than 230,000 barrels of water per day, 160 million standard cubic feet per day (MMscfd) of production gas and will have the capacity to store 1.6million barrels of oil. The vessel is designed to remain on the field for up to 20 years without dry docking.

Sembcorp Marine said the contract will contribute to its earnings for the year ending December 31, 2009.

Modec is a general contractor specialising in engineering, procurement, construction and installation of floating production systems including FPSO vessels, floating storage and offloading (FSO) vessels, tension leg platforms (TLPs), production semisubmersibles, mobile offshore production units (MOPUs) and other new technologies which will meet the challenges of various types of gas production floaters. Modec also provides floating production system operation and maintenance services around the world.

Jurong Shipyard is a leading shipyard offering integrated services and customised solutions in ship repair, shipbuilding, ship conversion, rig building and offshore engineering to a world-wide clientele. Apart from its proven track record in the building and servicing of jack-up and semi-submersible rigs, Jurong Shipyard is also a world leader in the EPC conversion of tankers to FPSOs, floating storage tankers (FSOs) and floating production units (FPU).

SRI LANKA: Bunker supplier acquires tanker for fuel storage

(http://www.augustenergy.biz/, August 18, Tuesday) --- Article from EnergyAsia...

(http://www.energyasia.com/) --- Lanka Maritime Services, a unit of Sri Lankan conglomerate John Keells Holdings, said it has expanded its floating storage with the acquisition of an 8,800 DWT double-hull tanker to provide bunkering services at Sri Lanka’s Colombo port.

Lanka Maritime Services said it was prompted to acquire the ship because of berthing problems for its tankers at the port.

“In order to increase the throughput and volume it is necessary for us to have our own vessel to transport our commodity,” Mohamed Reza, Lanka Maritime Services director, said in a statement.

Until a Supreme Court ruling last year, Lanka Maritime Services used to have an effective monopoly of bunker supply in the Colombo port.

Sri Lanka, Maldives trade shifting to services: envoy

(http://www.augustenergy.biz/, August 17, Monday) - Article from LBO .....

The Maldives is introducing laws to attract foreign investors such as those from Sri Lanka with whom the archipelago's trade is growing and shifting towards services, the Maldivian envoy to Colombo said.

High commissioner Ali Hassen Didi said the two countries have had close trade links for decades and shared entrepreneurship, with Sri Lankan professionals and businessmen making a key contribution to the Maldivian economy.

The new government elected in November 2008 was streamlining the Maldives trade and commercial laws to promote greater business growth.

"We're now drafting bills to make it more comfortable and attractive for foreign investors to come with their money," Didi told a news conference held to announce the Maldives international boat show in October.

"The new government is looking at the service industry, marine research, and setting up industrial zones.

"We're giving out land for boat builders to come in."

The Maldives was trying to diversify its economy but given the nature of the country - an archipelago of 1,190 islands, almost 200 of them inhabited - it would always be dominated by tourism and fishing.

"It is a risk to have tourism as the main bread winner," Didi said.

"But being insular, as a small island nation, you have to face the reality in economies of scale.

"The only economies of scale we can achieve is through tourism. Even if we did diversify, I still think tourism will be a big chunk of the economy."

Sri Lanka and the Maldives continued to trade the same goods they had done for so long with Sri Lanka importing Maldive fish and fish products and exporting groceries and perishables.

Oil tanker storage spikes

(http://www.augustenergy.biz/, August 13, Thursday) --- Article from Reuters ...

The amount of crude oil being stored at sea has risen sharply over the last two weeks, particularly in the U. S. Gulf, due to a price incentive for oil companies to hold stocks on board vessels, traders and analysts said.

Several industry sources estimated that there were 70 million barrels of oil being stored at sea. While the estimates vary from around 60 million to 100 million barrels, most sources agree offshore storage levels rose by around 10 million barrels in the last two weeks alone.

A Very Large Crude Carrier(VLCC) can store up to two million barrels of crude oil.

An oil price structure known as a contango makes it more profitable for oil companies to store their crude rather than deliver it immediately because the price further in the future is higher.

"We have seen renewed interest in chartering VLCCs for storing crude oil of late," said Simon Chattrabhuti, head of tanker research with ICAP Shipping in London.

West Texas Intermediate crude futures for delivery next month have been discounted by $2 a barrel compared to crude for delivery in two months.
